How it Works

Air enters the spiral irradiance chamber where it is swirled.

The swirling action causes droplets and pathogens to cling to the aluminum walls of the spiral irradiance chamber while a high power Ultraviolet C (UVC) LED irradiates the pathogens. After just 1.5 seconds on the chamber walls, 99.996% of ssRNA viruses (such as coronaviruses) will be inactivated.

The chamber is specially designed to be highly reflective in order to achieve an amplifying effect where UVC radiation is reflected within the chamber many times until it encounters a particle (such as a pathogen) which absorbs the radiation.

In technical terms, this is the same phenomenon seen in the photometric world with “sphere multipliers” in integrating spheres. In more basic terms, it is like having a bullet ricochet about the chamber until it encounters a target (ie pathogen) that absorbs it. This amplification along with the use of the highest power UVC LED currently available allows the Ultra Vee Mask to inactivate ~99.9% of viruses in .6 seconds while the viruses are in the air. Because the “survival” rate of pathogens is logarithmic, after 1 second, ~99.8871% of ssRNA viruses on surfaces and ~99.9995% of ssRNA viruses in the air will be inactivated (viruses in the air receive a greater “dosage” or to use the technically correct term, fluence since they are irradiated on all sides in our specially designed irradiance chamber).

If any pathogens are still active after transiting the spiral irradiance chamber and have not adhered to the chamber walls, a special UV stable electrostatic filter provides the next layer of defense by attracting pathogens, large and small. The electrostatic filter retains the pathogens in front of the LED to be further irradiated. Again, after 1.5 seconds on the electrostatic filter, ~99.996% of any remaining ssRNA viruses will be inactivated.

Here, the highly reflective chamber also ensures pathogens are bombarded from all angles and reduces their likelihood of surviving due to shadowing.

Behind the UV resistant electrostatic filter lies an additional line of defense: An anti-microbial copper screen which inactivates pathogens including coronaviruses on contact.

Any unlikely pathogens that still remain will be further filtered by conventional means, depending on the filter being used.

The user can choose to use canisters in our MAX model if they feel are more comfortable with the added protection of canisters, or they can use a flat electrostatic filter for a lighter solution.


Why it Matters

Whether you are using a N95 mask or a respirator with N95 filters, these masks are designed to merely filter out particulates that are 300nm or larger.  However many pathogens are much smaller.  The SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus for example is typically 125nm in diameter.


Adaptive to Your Needs

The Ultra Vee Mask is available in numerous configurations to suit your needs.

The MAX configuration provides the ultimate in protection. In this configuration, the Ultra Vee Air Sanitizing Unit (UVASU) works in conjunction with canister filters and can be carried in a shoulder bag or sling.

The LIGHT configuration combines the HVASU with flat filters instead of canisters for increased mobility.

The Ultra Vee LED Module (UVLM) can be removed from the Ultra Vee Air Sanitizing Unit (UVASU) to disinfect large objects such as packages or gowns.

  • Although the radiation from the UVLM does not appear to be bright to human eyes, there is a dangerous amount of UVC radiation being emitted from the high power LED. Always shine the UVC light away from you and never toward other persons our yourself. Protective eyewear should always be worn when using the UVLM.

The UVLM can also be mated to the Ultra Vee Disinfection Chamber (UVDC) to sterilize objects such as phones, keys, instruments, or other masks. The chamber is made to reflect the UVC light within the chamber and comes with a steel wire stand to reduce shadowing.

  • Note that UVC light can degrade many materials. Exercise caution and use in accordance to guidelines set by manufacturers. Because the UVLM produces a high amount of UVC light, only a few seconds of exposure is needed to sterilize most objects.


The Latest in UVC LED Technology

We use a specialized American made LED that is tuned to produce UVC radiation at the optimal germicidal wavelength for maximum effectiveness and efficiency.

Our testing has shown the Ultra Vee Mask UVC LED to be effective at killing bacterial cultures. Incidentally, the Ultra Vee LED was so powerful that it caused darkening of the plastic Petri dishes

Our LEDs have also been designed to not produce ozone which can be dangerous if inhaled. Other UVC lamps may produce dangerous levels of ozone.

Although most UVC LEDs are similar in appearance, they vary drastically in output. We use recently developed high output UVC LEDs made in America which are over 12X more powerful than typical Chinese UVC LEDs.

Our LEDs are also more efficient than other UVC LEDs allowing them to be powered by small power banks for long periods of time.


Designed for Compatibility

Unlike many commercial masks, the Ultra Vee Mask is not designed to lock users into proprietary consumables. Instead it was designed for maximum compatibility so that they can be used throughout the world using commonly available consumable components and help protect as many people as possible, as fast as possible.

The Ultra Vee Air Sterilizing Units (UVASU) are made to be compatible with many types of commonly available masks if you want to use our own mask. This includes most modern 40mm masks such as those from Scott, North, and Mira, and others as well as most military surplus masks that use 40mm canisters. Many modern masks such as those from Honeywell and 3M masks (requires bayonet to 40mm adapter) also are compatible.

  • We recommend using full face masks for maximum protection

For our MAX model, the UVASU can be used in conjunction with commonly available cartridges, ranging from 40mm military canisters to commercial Honeywell cartridges.

  • Make sure to use safe canisters as some old and expired canisters may pose risks.

The UVASU can be powered by any USB power bank to suit your needs
